Pre IVF Hysteroscopy

A pre-IVF hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows fertility specialists to evaluate the uterine cavity and identify any abnormalities that could affect embryo implantation. This can help ensure the uterus is ready to support an embryo and increase the chances of a successful pregnancy.

During a hysteroscopy, a narrow scope is inserted through the cervix into the uterus to visualize growths like polyps or fibroids. These conditions are often asymptomatic but can lead to failed implantation and miscarriage. Other abnormalities that can be identified include uterine septa, which are fibrous bands that divide the uterine cavity, and uterine adhesions, which are scar tissues.

A hysteroscopy can be performed in an exam room under mild sedation and usually takes 20–30 minutes. It can also be performed in an operating room under anesthesia and can take up to two hours or more.

While a hysteroscopy isn't always recommended, some say it's a must and the best way to check that the uterus is healthy and ready for a baby. However, one study found that performing an office hysteroscopy before IVF-embryo transfer didn't significantly improve pregnancy outcomes.
